Lockdown 3

Another blog about one subject.  Hmm.   What to do?

Well, we’re all playing the waiting game, I guess.  The lockdown here is even tighter that it was.  Now I have to take my permission paper into the supermarche where they stamp the date.  Apparently locals have taken to going shopping simply to go and have a natter with their friends every day.  The bloke at the desk also told me I only had 4 hours in the shop.

Afternoon walkies

Four hours!  What the Hell would I do for four hours inside a medium sized supermarket?  My mind was boggled.  Until I got inside and saw people just standing there in front of produce for ages and ages.  Seriously, how long does a decision about which butter to buy actually take?  Should it take 20 minutes?  Really?  And don’t get me started on the couple who were in the sugar aisle for the whole of the 35 minutes that I was there.

our classroom

Anyway, lockdown continues, as does Virtual School.  It’s a weird experience all round, for us and the kids.  And doing 3 hours of Zoom lessons/assessment is bloody exhausting let me tell you.  Sonalee is struggling with trying to replicate her teaching style online.  And a lot of the kids are struggling with just not having a human being in front of them and not being around their mates.

the cliffs

God, I miss football.   The pizzas at school are nice as well.  I miss them.

Sonalee has been providing an essential service for a few of our workmates – cooking curry.  We can’t have people round, obviously, but she loves cooking for our friends.  So we get the Paul Takeaway Curry Service which can only deliver to the area that the police allow me into.  We think people have appreciated it.

The dogs are, of course, loving it.  It doesn’t get much better for them, truly.  We walk on the beach early each morning, I cook twice each day thus affording them opportunities for scraps of stuff, we do a walk in the evening to see the sea from the cliffs – this Atlantic coast is spectacular every day – and its cat mating season so there is plenty to get excited about outside.  If they had their way, lockdown would last forever.

Luna is still being the PITA – Pain in the Arse.  Other people’s gardens are just an extension of her territory whilst other people’s dogs are there to be barked at ferociously in a really annoying high pitch .  She nearly went into the heavily fortified and very well guarded by men with guns Royal Palace the other day  which would have been interesting to say the least.  And this week I thought she was going to get arrested when she tried sauntering into our local police station, fortunately the duty officer likes dogs.   She charmed everyone at  the local shop, of course, and I reckon she is known by everyone who lives round here.  And they all love her!  No matter how naughty she is, they all love her.

Bah.

I managed to get a passing grade for my last essay, something that I was extremely pleased with.  This Postgrad course is proving to be quite difficult.  I have struggled these past three months to get to grips with it mainly because of all of the learning I had to do as part of my new job.  It wasn’t easy starting in a new school with a myriad of systems to learn and come home to study.  My mark wasn’t as good as I would have liked it to be but, I tell you, it felt bloody wonderful to have got a decent pass.  Two more essays to go – one due next week.

lockdown

And that’s it really.  We read about news from home and from the UK each day and it makes us thoughtful.  We read about the situation in Morocco and get hopeful.  Sonalee plays the piano each day and is improving exponentially, as is her bread-making.   Our French is suffering badly because we’re no longer having  lessons and, after going on Duolingo, I have realised how much our Spanish has slipped away.  We can’t have that.

We still haven’t used up our last tin of Baked Beans.  We are being strong.  And our last pack of amazing Irish cheddar is still in the fridge.  Trust me, that takes a lot of willpower.  We’ve rationed the wine because you can’t  buy booze during Ramadan but, and I know this will cause much distress for you at my suffering, the last of our beer has gone.  No beer for a month!

We’re hopeful that we can go home for at least a small portion of the summer.  We miss our village a lot.  We miss being in Spain full stop- the wine, the food, the lifestyle, the language and the Campo.  We couldn’t, however, have been more lucky to be where we are in Morocco.  We know this and appreciate it every day.  We did plan to see more of Morocco during this term but I guess we will have to wait until later this year to do that.

These are strange times.  I am not sure that Sonalee and I have fully grasped just how odd these months are.   We have built a routine that enables us to do our jobs, keep us healthy and safe and to try to make the best of the situation we find ourselves in.  We experienced it in Sri Lanka for a few very short periods – that time when you have no control over events and are forced to do what the government tells you to do – so we weren’t phased too much by the restrictions but nothing on this scale.

Lockdown is so hard
Beach patrol

We worry.  We worry about our mums a lot.  We worry about our mates who are facing a multitude of problems, financial or otherwise and we worry about our village and the people who live in it.  Do we worry about only having 2 bottles of HP sauce left?  Er, yeah!  Hello!  Plus only one box of Sage and Onion?   These things are important!

dusk from the terrace

I also worry that the haircut I gave myself makes me look like a twat who stupidly gave himself a crap haircut.  I also worry about not washing for 2 days but am even more worried that my wife doesn’t even notice anymore.  Naturally,  I worry about being unemployed in August and that Pompey won’t be able to finish their season.

Early morning walkies

God, I miss football.

And that’s it really.  Apologies for the dullness of the blog.  I’ll do my favourite joke, just to liven the mood…

Luna wants to play with all of the cats

Woman walks into the pub and asks the barman for a double-entendre.  So he gives her one.

Intercept!

Hasta luego, inshallah

PS   Our holiday with Suzi, my Canadian friend, in Portugal has had to be cancelled.  This is a bummer.  In honour of this postponement, here is my 2nd favourite Canadian band being pointedAnd here too being poignant.  One of the best live acts you’ll ever see, being irreverent
