Breakfast Andalusian style – Media con Tomate and coffee

May has been rather busy for the eight of us (I adult, 1 man-child, 4 dogs, 2 cats) since it has involved a visit to France, as detailed last time, and, since then, a major Fiesta in our village plus the visit of my mum for a week.  And, of course, the European elections which took place very recently.  It has meant that the ordinary things like washing and hoovering have taken somewhat of a backseat, which is fine because the dogs and cats prefer it that way anyway.

I would like to say that other tasks, specifically ironing, have also been neglected.  This would, however, be disingenuous since our iron and the attendant ironing-board are still within their wrapping from July last year when we naively thought we would be undertaking such activities.  How we laugh about that now!

No, I have no idea how we are going to cope when we return to work either.  The phrase ‘shock to the system’ comes to mind.

Anyway, the Fiesta.  It is primarily supposed to be about the patron saint of Fuente Tojar, San Isidro.  He was a good man, apparently.  And he loved animals.  So, what better way to celebrate his life and his benevolence to this village than by having a five day fiesta full of good food, good booze, some parades around the village, some marching bands, some more bands to play on a temporary stage each night until 6 in the morning, more nice food and more nice booze?

And why not chuck in some beautifully groomed horses to stand around randomly whilst their riders drink white wine,  a bouncy castle/cage resembling something out of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, some Flamenca performed by kids from a neighbouring village, a Jenga competition for all ages, yet another football 5 aside and a photobooth?

Giles Tremlett said, in his instructive book ‘Ghosts of Spain’, that the Spanish know how to party.   He was not wrong.  Bloody Hell, do they know how to party.  The winter is over, the crops are in, the olive harvest has been a good one, and it’s too hot to do anything constructive after 2 pm so why not celebrate this part of the annual cycle of life here in rural Andalusia?  

It was, despite the lack of sleep for all concerned, a great time for the village.  It seems like life has returned to it in some ways.   The winter was a drudge and the spring saw many people working long hours in the fields to earn their crust.  The clearing up of the fields in terms of pruning, clearing and spraying is still taking place but there is less urgency about these activities.

For urban creatures such as ourselves, this part of Andalusian life has been a revelation in many ways.  For starters, the importance of seasons has been striking.  There is a season for all kinds of different fruits and vegetables in addition to the olives.  In Sri Lanka there were but two seasons for us in Colombo – wet and hot or dry and hot.  That was it.  The rest of it, we were pretty ignorant of because we lived outside of the real world or, as was often discussed, in a bubble.

I think it is safe to say that this no longer the case, for the next few months more at least.

Mum and Sonalee at the Mirador

This was the theme of my mum’s visit for a week.  Naturally, she was greeted at the airport by me and my dog, Dora.  This is normal.  Andy Kirk and my nephew Jack will attest to this.  Dora is the airport dog.  She is cute, she loves being in the car with me and she listens to me and my singing without complaint or argument as I drive.  She also likes being fed the ham and cheese from the snacks taken whilst on the road.

So mum was picked up without drama and transported from suburban Portsmouth to rural Spain in the heat of Spring/Summer.  The last time she was here the weather was a bit shitty.  It was cold and rainy and we weren’t used to it at all.  And the house wasn’t used to it either.  This time the bathroom and bedroom had been ‘Pauled’.  This means that the most urgent repairs have been done, mostly okay but certainly not professionally.  It also means that there are lots of the little things will still need to be done but enthusiasm dictates that there is always something else to distract (plus a lack of skill).  The result of a room being ‘Pauled’ is that there is a noticeable improvement in the décor and yet there is still an air of it being a bit badly done.  The best thing is that, being an old and neglected house, no one cares!

What to do?

Anyway, mum appreciated the efforts and, to be fair, none of our house-sitters have complained so it can’t be all bad.  For this visit Sonalee and I decided that mum would benefit most from just living alongside us as opposed to us showing her the Instagram sights and sounds of Andalusia.  That, plus it really is too hot to doing anything sensible between the hours of 2 and 7.  I’m not kidding, it is already reaching the mid 30’s here each day.

For mum it meant an early morning long walk with us  in the campo leading her ex-foster dog Luna.  Aww, Luna.  So cute.  So funny.  Such a pain in the arse.  The whole village now knows who she is.  One Sunday, she decided to leg it away in the campo and not come back.  Sonalee went to look for her and was surprised (but not wholly) when a car pulled up and the driver asked her if the dog in the back, found miles and miles away,  was hers.  Of course it was.  The same happened a few days later when a car stopped outside the house and two blokes brought out a guilty-looking hound who had failed to return after another walk.  They had found her in their stables, chasing horses.   She is, as my mother remarked, a Little Tinker.

So my mum also experienced the hot summer sun and the joy of watching tv downstairs in a house that is designed to express heat quickly.  She also helped us in the garden, instructed me how to make a quiche, visited an amazing castle, learned how the Moors lived in glorious Cordoba,  saw first-hand how the villagers spend summer nights at the plaza bar and, we hope, had a good time.

It was lovely to have her here, as it has been for all of our guests.  Showing others the joys and not-so joys of life in Andalusia has been a pleasure for Sonalee and I in our year away from the stress of working.  And showing normal people that living with four dogs and two cats isn’t necessarily a barrier to having a life has also been good.  Our guests may disagree with that last bit as they find dog hairs in their clothes weeks after visiting but what to do?

We know that, soon, we will have to return to the real world but we are enjoying our last few months here in the unrelenting sun.  We are loving our morning walks that our dogs get so excited about.  Mum loved it as well – an hour’s stroll amongst the fields full of bright flowers before breakfast is a real treat for anyone when it isn’t winter.

We’re not sure about the joys of watching the said dogs enjoy some of the fruits of the walks, namely the opportunity to have a really good poo.  It is an important part of the day for all of us, let us at least admit that.  For the mutts, it means different things.  Luna likes to do her business anywhere – on-street or not, she doesn’t care.

Luna has her method whereby she squats and ‘lays her eggs’ but, at the crucial end of the laying, she gets impatient and starts to walk away.  This results in little ‘eggs’ being place a metre or so away from the main body of deposits.  Dora does hers in the campo and without regard to shame – she is a proud pooper who leaves something with a pungency that is difficult to rival.  She also leaves the area with a noticeable spring in her step as she seemingly feels liberated all of a sudden. 

Dante likes to choose his spots – he has his favourites in the local field that he likes to defecate in and he takes his time to make it just so.  He will circle several times before choosing the perfect place to aid the growth of local plants.  And he takes his time as well – there is no rushing a good poo for this boy.   Bindi is a little princess and so requires privacy to do her business away from the train of humans and dogs wandering amongst the olives.  A very discreet lady is our Bindi, and a good example for all of us.

I know what you’re thinking – he’s describing how his dogs have a crap?  Why? 

I’ll tell you why.  You spend a year not working and you’ll soon find other things to get occupied by.  You live in a village where everyone knows who you are but few know you well and communication is basic at best.  And you live in an area where walking in the countryside with your animals is the start of every day because you have the time to do so.  The rhythms of your life are reduced to being healthy, being happy and being free to find out the small details of those that you live with, including yourself.

Well, after a year off, you will know much more about these mundane things.  And you will not regret a single thing.  Trust me on this.  My mum saw this because she’s my mum.  My best mate saw this because he’s my best mate.  My mate from Sri Lanka saw this because he’s my mate who knows me so well. 

The Thinking Lady

Sonalee said, this very evening, that some people think that taking a year off is a very brave thing to do.  Maybe.  Maybe I’m lucky enough to have had the financial backing to be have been able to do so but I don’t feel brave.  If your expectations don’t include luxury then I’m not sure that taking time out from the grind of life can be considered something brave.  Given that literally anything can happen to us at any time, I’m think it just seems natural to seek some time to find out about yourself and your loves, it just seems sensible.

 I don’t know, perhaps I am getting carried away.  Perhaps I am at that point where feelings, not reasons, decide.  Is this a bad thing? I hope not.  As we approach the last few months of our year off, I marvel at how we have lived and learned.  We are very lucky people and I think we know this.  I hope we do.  ‘
